UPDATE DIRECT FROM FURUNO REGARDING GPS ROLLOVERS AND EQUIPMENT FUNCTIONALITY FOR 2021.
As you may be aware, the Global Positioning System (GPS) has its own date and time scale for expressing satellite positions. The system is based on counting weeks and seconds within a week. The legacy GPS navigation message has a ten-bit parameter that represents the week number. Consequently, the week number parameter in the GPS navigation message has rolled over to zero every 1024th week since 6 January 1980, with the next week rollover occurring 6 April 2019.
In anticipation, we have examined the SAAB products that are or have been in production.
The following is to be observed:
AIS/GPS/SATC models that support automatic changeover to the next 1024 weeks.
All Felcom models use external GPS unless an add-on GPS board kit has been installed.
AIS/GPS/SATC models that can be software upgraded to support changeover to the next 1024 weeks – currently none.
AIS/GPS/SATC models that cannot be software upgraded to support changeover to the next 1024 weeks – and requires new equipment:
It is the type of GPS core module in the device that defines when the equipment will be affected by the roll over. By running the self-test, the unit will display GPS program no. (Press “MENU ESC” followed by “8” to display self-test) GPS Program no. 4850237*** and 4850238*** = Rollover 20/06/2021 If GPS Program no. differs from above = Rollover 02/01/2022
